Best time to take a GLP-1: what the labels say about time of day and day of week
The weekly injections can go in at any time of day. The Wegovy tablet cannot. Here is each rule, and how far you can move your injection day.
For the weekly injections, the labels say any time of day, with or without meals: Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound [1][2][3][4]. What matters more is the day. Ozempic and Wegovy are given on the same day each week [1][2], and you can move the day if the gap between two doses is at least 3 days (72 hours) for Mounjaro and Zepbound [3][4] or at least 2 days (more than 48 hours) for Ozempic [1]. The Wegovy tablet is different: take it in the morning on an empty stomach with water [2].
Time of day and day of week, by medicine
| Medicine | Time of day | With food? | Day of the week | Changing the day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ozempic | Any time of day [1] | With or without meals [1] | Same day each week [1] | If the time between two doses is at least 2 days (more than 48 hours) [1] |
| Wegovy injection | Any time of day, and it can be changed without a dose modification [2] | With or without meals [2] | Same day each week [2] | The label text we reviewed gives no minimum gap, so ask your prescriber |
| Mounjaro | Any time of day [3] | With or without meals [3] | Once weekly [3] | If the time between two doses is at least 3 days (72 hours) [3] |
| Zepbound | Any time of day [4] | With or without meals [4] | Once weekly [4] | If the time between two doses is at least 3 days (72 hours) [4] |
| Wegovy tablet (daily) | In the morning [2] | Empty stomach, water only up to 4 ounces, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medicines [2] | Every day | Not applicable |
So how do you pick a day?
The labels do not rank days or hours, so the practical choice is yours and your prescriber’s. A day you will remember, with a reminder set, is the common-sense one. The labels’ real constraint is the spacing between doses. If you move the day, check the minimum gap in the table so two doses do not land too close together.
- Moving a Mounjaro or Zepbound day later is fine if at least 3 days (72 hours) separate the two doses [3][4].
- For Ozempic the minimum gap is at least 2 days (more than 48 hours) [1].
- If you are already late for a dose, that is a missed dose rather than a day change. See the missed dose checker.
