Sober September 2027: how to do it

September is a natural reset: summer is over and routines restart. Here is how to use it for a month without alcohol, and how it leads into Sober October.

Quick answer

Sober September means no alcohol from 1 to 30 September; in 2027 that is Wednesday 1 to Thursday 30 September. Unlike Dry January, it has no single organiser we could verify, so treat it as an informal challenge you run yourself. September suits a reset because routines restart after summer. A month off is the best-studied break: a BMJ Open study found falls in insulin resistance, blood pressure and weight after one month [1], and 70% of Dry January participants reported sleeping better [2].

What Sober September is

Sober September is a month without alcohol in September. We looked for who started it and could not find an origin we could verify: there is no official organiser in the way Alcohol Change UK runs Dry January [5] or Macmillan runs Sober for October [6]. That makes it flexible. You set the rules, and you do not need to sign up for anything.

A plan for a back-to-routine month

  • Start with the routine change. School terms, work projects and evenings restart. Build your alcohol-free evening into the new routine from day one, rather than adding it later.
  • Plan Labor Day weekend. It arrives in the first week, before new habits have settled.
  • Use the season. Longer evenings indoors are good for a new hobby, a class or an early night.
  • Watch the end-of-summer feeling. Some people drink to stretch summer out. Name it if you notice it.

Your rules, since nobody sets them for you

Without an organiser, Sober September is whatever you decide it is. That freedom is useful, but only if you decide before 1 September rather than in the middle of a Friday night.

  • All 30 days, or weekdays only? A full month gives you a clean result. Weekdays only is a smaller step that still breaks the daily habit.
  • Alcohol-free drinks: in or out? Some people find a zero-alcohol beer keeps the ritual going; others find it keeps the craving going.
  • A wedding or holiday in the month? Choose now whether it is an exception, and if it is, what your limit will be that day.
  • What you will track. Days, money, sleep or mood. Pick one or two so you can compare the start of the month with the end.

September into October: a 61-day run

Sober September leads straight into Sober October, so you can turn one month into two. Sixty-one days takes you past the 60-day milestone, which is around the point habit research suggests new routines start to feel automatic, on average [7]. See our Sober October guide for the second month.
