Wegovy vs Ozempic: same drug, different labels

Both contain semaglutide. The labels differ in what each is approved for, how the dose steps up, how high it goes and what to do after a missed dose.

Quick answer

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and both are made by Novo Nordisk [2][1]. They are separate products with separate labels. Ozempic is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and to lower cardiovascular and kidney risks in that group [1]. Wegovy is approved for weight reduction and long-term maintenance, to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight, and for a form of liver disease called MASH [2]. Ozempic’s dose steps end at 2 mg weekly, and Wegovy injection is usually maintained at 2.4 mg [1][2]. The Wegovy label says using it with other semaglutide products is not recommended [2].

Why one medicine has two names

Each brand was tested and approved for its own use, at its own doses, so each has its own label. Ozempic’s label is built around type 2 diabetes. Wegovy’s is built around weight and cardiovascular risk. The molecule is the same, so the two share warnings. Both labels carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors [1][2].

Because the labels are separate, so are the dose steps. Ozempic stops at 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 mg [1]. Wegovy injection steps through 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 1.7 mg to a maintenance dose, usually 2.4 mg [2]. A dose of one is not a like-for-like swap for a dose of the other. Only your prescriber can say how to move between them, and the Wegovy label’s switching section covers moving between Wegovy injection and Wegovy tablets, not Ozempic [2].

Side effects in each label’s trials

Constipation3.1% [1]1.5% [1]24% [2]11% [2]
Abdominal pain5.7% [1]4.6% [1]20% [2]10% [2]
Percentages are from different trials in different groups of people (type 2 diabetes for Ozempic, obesity or overweight for Wegovy), so do not read one column against the other as a head-to-head result. Both labels list stomach and bowel effects as the most common.

What the table does show is the pattern: in each trial, stomach and bowel effects were more common on the medicine than on placebo, and the labels advise stepping the dose up gradually to reduce them [1][2]. For the full side effect picture, see the GLP-1 side effects guide.

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss?

No. The Ozempic label’s approved uses are blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and the cardiovascular and kidney uses in that group. Weight reduction is not among them [1]. Wegovy is the semaglutide label with a weight reduction indication [2]. A prescriber can choose to prescribe a medicine for a use that is not on its label, and that is a decision between you and them. This page only reports what the labels say.

Can you use both?

The Wegovy label says that using it together with other semaglutide-containing products, or with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist, is not recommended [2]. Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide, so taking both would double up on the same ingredient. If you have been prescribed one and are unsure about the other, ask your prescriber before you inject anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

They contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and are both made by Novo Nordisk, but they are separate products with separate labels, uses and dose steps.

Is semaglutide the same as Ozempic?

Ozempic is a brand of semaglutide. Wegovy is another. The active ingredient is the same, and the labels differ.

What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?

Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and related cardiovascular and kidney risk. Wegovy is approved for weight reduction, cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight, and MASH. Their dose steps, highest doses and missed dose rules differ.

Which is stronger, Wegovy or Ozempic?

The labels list different dose ranges: Ozempic’s steps end at 2 mg weekly, while Wegovy injection is usually maintained at 2.4 mg. They are approved for different uses, and only your prescriber can set your dose.

Can I take Ozempic and Wegovy together?

The Wegovy label says using it with other semaglutide-containing products is not recommended. Ask your prescriber before using both.

Do Ozempic and Wegovy have the same side effects?

Both labels list stomach and bowel effects as the most common, and both carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors. The percentages come from different trials, so they are not a head-to-head comparison.
