2 years sober: past the first anniversary
The first year gets the attention. Two years is the quieter milestone, and the research on it is about staying, not starting.
Two years sober is in the "sustained" stage of NIAAA’s research definitions, which runs from 1 to 5 years [1]. Research on this period is observational. One study followed 1,162 people for 8 years and examined how the duration of abstinence related to health, relationships, housing and the odds of staying abstinent the next year [2]. At 14 US standard drinks a week, two years is 1,460 drinks skipped, about 20,440 g of alcohol and 143,080 kcal from the alcohol alone [3] [4].
The sustained stage
NIAAA’s recovery research definitions divide time into initial (up to 3 months), early (3 months to 1 year), sustained (1 to 5 years) and stable (more than 5 years) [1]. At two years you are about a quarter of the way through "sustained". The bands are research labels, not grades, but they reflect something real: the first year is about stopping, and what comes after is about building a life that holds the change in place.
NIAAA also describes recovery as more than not drinking: a process often marked by improvements in physical and mental health, quality of life and other aspects of wellbeing [1]. Two years is a good point to ask which of those have moved, and which have not yet.

What long-term studies looked at
Dennis, Foss and Scott followed 1,162 people for 8 years after they entered treatment and examined how the duration of abstinence, from one month to five or more years, related to other parts of recovery: health, mental health, coping, legal involvement, work, housing, peers and support [2]. They also examined how abstinence at a given point related to the odds of staying abstinent in the following year [2]. The abstract does not give percentages, so we do not quote any. It is worth knowing that this research exists and that it treated recovery as a set of changes over years.
A national survey is a useful counterweight to the idea that recovery is rare. In a probability-based survey of US adults, 9.1% said they used to have a problem with alcohol or drugs but no longer did, and 46% of them identified as "in recovery" [5]. That figure covers alcohol and drugs together, so it is a sense of scale, not an alcohol-only rate.

What to look at on a two-year anniversary
- Which skills are automatic now. The ones you no longer think about are the ones that are working.
- What you stopped doing. Any situation you still avoid completely is worth revisiting once, with a plan.
- Who knows. Sobriety held privately can feel lonely at two years. Telling one more person is a small step.
- What you are spending the savings on. If you cannot say, that is the sign to give the money a name.
Your counter after day 365
Sober Girl’s milestone list ends at 365 days, where the tree becomes an Ancient tree with golden blossoms. After that the counter, hours and money saved keep growing, and your journal and check-ins continue as before. We have not added badges beyond a year, so for years two and onwards the marker is yours. You can export your data from Settings under "Export my data". If you want to say something to someone else at this stage, see our soberversary messages.

Frequently asked questions
What happens after 2 years of sobriety?
There is no single list of changes. By NIAAA’s research definitions you are in the sustained stage, 1 to 5 years. Long-term studies describe changes across health, relationships and housing over years rather than a specific two-year effect.
Is 2 years sober a big milestone?
Yes. It is past the first-year attention and into the stage where the work is staying. Many twelve-step groups give an annual coin.
How many drinks is 2 years of not drinking?
At 14 standard drinks a week, 1,460 drinks, about 20,440 g of alcohol.
How common is it to be sober for 2 years?
In a US survey, 9.1% of adults said they used to have a problem with alcohol or drugs but no longer did. That covers alcohol and drugs together.
Does Sober Girl have a 2-year badge?
No. The milestone list ends at 365 days. The counter and money saved keep going beyond that.
