30 days no alcohol: before and after, and what you can measure

Before-and-after photos are everywhere and none of them is a study. Here is how to build your own, with the few things research has measured at one month.

Quick answer

There is no study that photographs faces at day 1 and day 30, so online before-and-after pictures are anecdotes. What research has measured after a month off is mostly blood and clinic numbers: in a BMJ Open study of 94 people who abstained for a month, insulin resistance fell 25.9%, systolic blood pressure 6.6% and weight 1.5%, with no matching change in 47 people who kept drinking [1]. The honest version of a before and after is your own: record seven things on day 1 (a photo, sleep, mood, weight, blood pressure if you have a cuff, spend and a one-line reason) and compare on day 30.

The honest answer about before-and-after pictures

We looked for a study that measured how the face, skin or hair changes at a set day after stopping and did not find one we could cite. The nearest thing is dermatology research on flushing and rosacea, covered in our alcohol face guide. A photo set on the internet with a "30 days later" caption is one person, with unknown lighting, sleep, diet and editing. It can be real and still say nothing about you.

So make your own. It takes five minutes on day 1, and it is more useful than anyone else’s. What follows is a short list of what to record, with the research that exists beside each item.

Read the study with care. It was observational, people chose their own group, the sample was small, and it excluded people with alcohol dependence [1]. If you drink heavily, the safe start is a conversation with a doctor, not a photo.

How to read your day 30

  1. Compare the same measures, not the mirror. A photo in better light will beat one in a dim bathroom, so use the same spot both times.
  2. Look for sleep and mood before skin. If sleep is still patchy, that is within the range described in research [2].
  3. Count the money, not the vanity numbers. A sum is a sum, and it is the one change nobody argues about.
  4. Write one paragraph. What is different about your mornings? Journal prompts can help.
  5. Decide what day 31 is. Keep going, set a plan or pick a date. 30 days sober and 60 days sober cover the next steps.

Today’s focus: take the day-1 photo

If you are on day 1, take it now. If you are on day 12, take one today and call it day 12. The count matters more than the label. In Sober Girl the home screen shows your days and the money you have kept, the daily check-in is your mood log, and the 30-day badge turns your tree into a Budding tree. Screenshot the counter on day 30 beside your photo.

Frequently asked questions

What happens after 30 days with no alcohol?

In a BMJ Open study of 94 people who abstained for a month, average insulin resistance fell 25.9%, systolic blood pressure 6.6% and weight 1.5%. It was observational and excluded people with alcohol dependence.

Are 30-day no alcohol before and after pictures real?

Some are, but they are single examples with unknown lighting, sleep and editing, and we found no study measuring face changes at day 30. Take your own photos under the same conditions.

Will my skin look better after a month without alcohol?

Research supports links between alcohol and flushing and rosacea, but we found no controlled study of how skin changes at one month. See the alcohol face guide for what is documented.

Does the liver improve after 30 days?

In healthy moderate drinkers, one study found a liver enzyme (GGT) fell after a month off and returned to baseline once they drank again. It does not describe what happens in people with liver disease. A doctor can check your liver.

What should I track for 30 days?

A day-1 photo, sleep, a one-word mood log, weight and blood pressure if you already measure them, weekly spend, and your count. The Sober Girl check-in and money saved cover the last three.
